At that time, 1945, the Macclesfield Canal was owned by the London North Eastern Railway Co. (LNER). This was because the original owners, the Manchester Sheffield & Lincoln Railway Co. Bollington east from canal aqueduct
This view from the canal aqueduct shows the ground that was later to become the War Memorial garden. In 1912 it was used by Bollington Urban District Council as a storage area for their materials such as setts. On the left is Palmerston Street and the Congrgational church, and behind it Oak Bank mill before the tall chimney was built.
