  • Palmerston Street Aqueduct

    Palmerston Street Aqueduct

The finest structure on the Macclesfield Canal, the aqueduct carries the canal high over the town. It was built in 1829-31 together with the unique, all stone constructed, embankment. Notice the setts paving the street; these were only removed when the road was reconstructed in the early 2000s. Look closely at the left of the picture and you may see the ghostly image of a lady in a wide brimmed hat! The photographer wanted for soime unknown reason to remove this lady from the picture. Another has also been removed from the right side.

  • Seven Girls

    Seven Girls

Seven girls pose in their summer dresses. Thought to be in Palmerston Street against the wall of Oak Bank mill, just to the left of the entrance, where the oil tanks were installed (see one over the wall). Today this is the entrance to Hamson Drive.

The girls are named as (from top left) Hylda Brogden, Joyce Bowden, Jean Chadwick, Hilda Wilcox, Brenda Lea, Anne Crichton and Margaret Clay.
