Lengthsman on canal near Styperson
A lengthsman is responsible for the maintenance of a length of canal. Albert Wood worked for the canal company, in 1935 this was the London North Eastern Railway Co. (LNER) who came to own the canal by default in 1923. The picture shows the narrow workboat standing on the bottom of the drained canal. The plank laid on the canal bed is to provide a footpath out of the mud to the work site which was probably a bridge behind the camera. Hareta would have been delivering Albert’s lunch; she would have walked up from Bollington where they lived.

Canal burst, Tinkers Clough
One of a series. This view is taken from Beehive bridge 28 looking north towards Adelphi Mill. After the breach the canal was stanked at this point and refilled with water. Fill was brought by boat to here and off-loaded into tramway trucks (bottom right) to be carried to the breach. In the group of boats in the background that in the front left appears to be the directors’ inspection boat with its clearstory roof. The townspeople have turned out in large numbers in their Sunday best to see what they can of this unusual incident.

Waterhouse mills
This is the oldest picture in our collection. It was taken before the railway was built across the foreground in 1868/9. Notice the corner of the Methodist manse on the right edge of the picture. The grass in the foreground is now part of the lawn in front of St Gregory’s church. See ‘Bollington in old picture postcards’ number 4 for full details.
